{"id":142,"date":"2017-11-17T17:05:30","date_gmt":"2017-11-17T17:05:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mrsdprojects.ri.cmu.edu\/2017teame\/?page_id=142"},"modified":"2018-04-03T20:19:55","modified_gmt":"2018-04-03T20:19:55","slug":"problem-description","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/mrsdprojects.ri.cmu.edu\/2017teame\/problem-description\/","title":{"rendered":"Problem Description"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Every year in the United States, approximately 2.5 million accidents are reported at intersections, as reported by the Federal Highway Commission<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[1]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u00a0The same agency reports that intersection accidents account for 40% of all crashes. \u00a0Worse, 50% of all serious collisions and 20% of all fatal collisions occur at intersections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found \u201cobstructed view\u201d as a primary reason for intersection accidents across drivers of all ages and genders<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[2]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u00a0This will come as no surprise to any driver, though. \u00a0Intersections pose difficulties that drivers do not experience on 2 lane roads, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Timed signals to monitor<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cars from the side turning in front of driver<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cars from in front turning in front of driver<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cars stopping in front of driver to turn<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pedestrians crossing in front of driver<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pedestrians crossing beside driver<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With all these reasons accounted for, it is no wonder how many accidents occur at intersections. \u00a0In many cases, drivers simply have too many obstacles to account for at any given time. The proliferation of self driving cars may assist vehicles at intersections in accounting for a large number of obstacles simultaneously, but the problem of occluded viewpoints remains. \u00a0With only car-mounted sensors, vehicles driving through intersections may not be able to detect obstacles such as crossing vehicles and pedestrians if their view is occluded by larger vehicles. \u00a0The use of information gathered on sensors outside the vehicle will therefore be necessary to solve the occlusion problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-422 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/mrsdprojects.ri.cmu.edu\/2017teame\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2018\/04\/Website_ProblemDesc.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"379\" height=\"301\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-421 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/mrsdprojects.ri.cmu.edu\/2017teame\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2018\/04\/Website_ProblemDesc2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"373\" height=\"295\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To solve the occlusion problem, we are proposing an infrastructure system at intersections to monitor the area. \u00a0This system will be able to detect obstacles (primarily pedestrians and vehicles) and predict their movements. \u00a0Furthermore, the system will be designed to interface with vehicles approaching and passing through intersections, so that it can communicate with these vehicles. \u00a0By utilizing path prediction and communication, the system will be able to detect would-be collisions in advance and alert vehicles, thus preventing collisions. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This project will develop a LiDAR\/Camera-based system which can detect and track pedestrians and communicate with a single autonomous vehicle. \u00a0The system will be tested on a controlled intersection with a known occluded space before being generalized to a four-way intersection with a traffic light. \u00a0Our hope is that the technology we develop can be put to use in the future at all intersections, and ultimately for car-to-car sensor sharing.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every year in the United States, approximately 2.5 million accidents are reported at intersections, as reported by the Federal Highway Commission[1]. \u00a0The same agency reports that intersection accidents account for 40% of all crashes. \u00a0Worse, 50% of all serious collisions and 20% of all fatal collisions occur at intersections.
