Spring Validation Experiment

Test system – Scorpion platform with sensor assemblies, marking assembly, and user interface installed.

Test setup – In the grass field at the NREC campus, 10 targets are buried in a 5 x 5m area to a range of depths, up to a maximum of 15cm. The targets consist of 5 metallic cylindrical objects to represent landmines and 5 metallic non-cylindrical objects to represent debris. The top surface of the simulated landmines is covered with a 3mm layer of putty before burial. The area is divided into 5 x 1m wide lanes with flags at the ends. The right hand lane is free of an

SVE Procedure
Operator A selects the area to be surveyed on the UI display.
Operator A presses the “Start Survey” button on the UI and pushes the cart along the right hand lane. At the same time, a test assistant measures the time taken for the cart to reach the end of the lane and verifies that the rate of coverage exceeds 3m²/min (M.N.3).
Operator A maneuvers the cart to enter the adjacent lane, demonstrating the ability to execute a 180° pin turn (D.N.1).
While pushing the cart, a target may be detected at any time. Operator A responds to the signals on the UI as appropriate.
When the survey is complete, Operator B presses the “Generate Report” button on the UI.
Using the report, Operator B verifies that at least 4 of the 5 simulated landmines were correctly classified (M.F.1).
Using the report, Operator B verifies that at least 3 of the 5 simulated debris objects were correctly classified (M.F.2).
Using the report, Operator B verifies that the time of classification for each detected object was <5 minutes (M.N.4).
Using the report, Operator B verifies that the maximum distance between the pre-entered landmine locations and the locations of the objects identified as landmines is <50cm (D.F.1)
Using the report, Operator B verifies that the maximum distance between the pre-entered lane locations and the vehicle’s recorded path is <50cm (D.F.2).
Test assistant A measures the maximum distance between the true locations of the targets identified as landmines and the corresponding ground marking made during the survey and verifies it is <10cm (M.F.4).
Test assistant A measures the maximum distance between preset lane markings and the ground marking made during the survey and verifies it is <10cm (D.F.3).
Test assistants B and C remove the buried simulated landmines from the ground and verify that no impressions were made on the top surface (M.F.3).
Operator B shows a log of prior system operation and verifies that the difference between timestamps of an initial detection by the metal detector and a warning on the user interface is <0.25s (M.F.5).
Operator B presents a record of expenditure of <$5000 (M.N.1).
Operator B shows a log of prior system operation for a continuous period of >1hr (M.N.2).
Operator B presents a photo of the weighing of each component assembly, showing that each is <50kg (D.N.2).
